Application
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to safely use basic lifting equipment such as slings, ropes, shackles, eye bolts and spreader beams.
It applies to individuals who perform a range of mainly routine tasks in various sectors of the printing and graphic arts industry, using limited practical skills and fundamental knowledge in a defined context. They generally work under direct supervision.
No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Evidence of Performance
Evidence of the ability to:
safely lift loads using basic equipment such as slings, ropes, shackles, eye bolts and spreader beams
mechanically lift TWO loads according to enterprise and statutory requirements and regulations.
Note: If a specific volume or frequency is not stated, then evidence must be provided at least once.
Evidence of Knowledge
To complete the unit requirements safely and effectively, the individual must:
Attach lifting gear and select appropriate equipment to lift loads
outline available references to determine safety practices for lifting loads
describe some important considerations when lifting loads mechanically
explain how to determine the best method to lift the load
list various types of mechanical lifting devices, and circumstances under which they are used
describe the type of damage that can occur to any particular piece of lifting equipment
outline problems that can occur if lifting gear is not attached properly
Correctly apply safe practices to move loads
demonstrate knowledge of safe practices to observe when moving loads
explain conventions to observe when connecting lifting gear to the load mover
list specific communication techniques used for moving the load
identify the safe distance for personnel not involved in moving the load
list other techniques for communication that could be used
describe effects of a load not being grounded correctly
outline where lifting gear should be stored after it has been detached

Assessment Conditions
Gather evidence to demonstrate consistent performance in conditions that are safe and replicate the workplace. Noise levels, production flow, interruptions and time variances must be typical of those experienced in the Support field of work and include access to slings, ropes, shackles, eye bolts, spreader beams and loads.
Assessors must satisfy NVR/AQTF assessor requirements.
